Welcome to Priorat St. Josef, a Benedictine priory nestled in the historic pilgrimage village of Maria Roggendorf in Lower Austria. Founded in 1991 by Göttweig Abbey, this warm community is glad to have you here.
The Priory of St. Joseph is the youngest monastery in the Austrian Benedictine Congregation. Currently, the convent consists of 15 monks.
Our most important tasks are the care of the pilgrimage in Maria Roggendorf, pastoral care in the surrounding parishes, religious instruction in several schools, spiritual guidance, and the accompaniment of groups from the Legion of Mary.
History
After the revival of the pilgrimage to Our Lady in Roggendorf, which had been banned in 1785, on October 13, 1969, a "domus formata" was established on September 8, 1974, and the St. Joseph's Superiory in Maria Roggendorf was founded on August 8, 1986. On June 7, 1990, the chapter of Göttweig Abbey decided to establish a dependent priory, which took place on September 7, 1991. On November 4, 2004, the chapter of Göttweig approved the establishment of St. Joseph's Priory as an independent monastery, which was carried out on December 11, 2005.
