In 2029, Benedictines across the world come together to celebrate 1,500 years of a living tradition rooted in the Gospel.

The Jubilee

What is the Benedictine Jubilee?

Around the year 529, St Benedict established a community at Monte Cassino that would become the foundation of Benedictine monastic life. Nearly 1,500 years later, that same way of life continues in monasteries on every continent. The Benedictine Jubilee 2029 marks this milestone not as the celebration of one place, but of an entire family. It is a global invitation to remembrance, honest reflection, and hopeful vision for the future.

More Than a Celebration

The Jubilee is not an exercise in nostalgia. Benedictine communities around the world are facing real questions about the future. Monasteries are ageing, some are closing, and the world they serve has changed beyond recognition. At the same time, there is a growing hunger for exactly what Benedictine life offers: stillness, community, rootedness, and a life oriented toward something beyond itself. The Jubilee is a chance to face these realities honestly and to rediscover what 1,500 years of endurance has to teach us about hope.

A four-year journey of hope

The journey to the Jubilee unfolds each year through four monasteries, each offering a theme of hope rooted in Saint Benedict’s life. In Norcia in 2026, we awaken in remembrance and gratitude. In Rome in 2027, we listen to God, the Church, and the world with courage. In Subiaco in 2028, we grow through struggle, change, and the school of the Lord’s service. In Montecassino in 2029, we flourish in holiness and service, renewing our monasteries as lasting places of hope for Church and world.

Hope in Every Place

Why "Places of Hope"?

Benedictines do not take the same vows as other religious orders. The first vow is stability: a commitment to one place, one community, for life. That rootedness is not a limitation. It is what allows monasteries to become something rare in the modern world. Places of genuine stillness, welcome, and encounter with God. "Places of Hope" speaks to what these communities have been since 529 and what they continue to be. Not relics of a former age, but living spaces where hope is practised daily and offered freely to all who come through the door.

From 529 to Today

The story of Benedictine life stretches across fifteen centuries, through the fall of empires, the building of universities, the destruction of war, and the quiet rebirth of communities thought to be lost. It is not the story of one monastery but of thousands, spanning every continent and nearly every culture on earth.
