Welcome to Lambach Benedictine Abbey, a Benedictine community in the heart of Upper Austria. We warmly invite you to share our faith and our way of life with us.
History
The secular canon monastery of Lambach, founded around 1046, was renewed in 1056 by St. Adalbero, the last of the Traungauer family, Counts of Lambach-Wels and Bishop of Würzburg, and established as a Benedictine community. The first monks arrived with Blessed Abbot Egbert from Schwarzach (now Münsterschwarzach). The Romanesque frescoes in the west choir of the abbey church also date from this period. In 1089, monks from Lambach settled in the monastery of Melk. The monastery, which was dissolved in 1941, was restored in 1945.
