History
The Abbey of the Child Jesus was founded on August 30, 1899, by the Abbey of Our Lady of Belloc, France. It was elevated to a Conventual Priory on February 27, 1903, and established as an Abbey on February 12, 1929. Since its foundation, the Community has had a significant influence on the religious, educational, and social life of the region through pastoral work in the Parish of Victoria, missionary activity, the agricultural-industrial school later transformed into a commercial school, a primary and secondary school in the city of Victoria (currently under the Diocese), and artisanal products such as honey and other beekeeping products, as well as the renowned Monacal liqueur made from 73 herbs, available in sweet or dry varieties. In 1956, the Abbey of Christ the King was founded in El Siambón, Tucumán (Argentina). Other foundations, such as the Monastery of La Pascua in Canelones (Uruguay) in 1976, did not prosper. In 1982, the Monastery of Saint Benedict of Llíu-Llíu, Limache (Chile), became a dependent house, which in 2022 came under the direct jurisdiction of the Congregation.
In 1998, the Community consecrated its abbey church, which is neo-Romanesque in style and very bright. On August 30, 1999, the centenary of the Abbey was joyfully celebrated with various events and the participation of a large crowd.
Currently, the monastic Community continues to carry out various activities such as the production of liqueurs, and dulce de leche. In its sales shop, it also offers a wide range of other artisanal products. There is also a well-stocked religious goods store. Additionally, the Abbey runs an Institute for Teacher Training and technical courses that operate within the Abbey itself. Guests are welcomed for spiritual retreats and to stay for a few days to rest and pray. The Abbey is also visited daily, especially on Sundays, by many visitors and pilgrims who tour the external parts of the monastery and participate in the liturgy, especially the Mass.
On special occasions, organ concerts, performances by other musical instruments, and choirs are offered in the abbey church
