History

Founded around 1070 by King Bolesław the Generous, the Benedictine Abbey in Lubiń is one of the oldest monasteries in Poland. Established to support the young Polish state, it soon became an important center of prayer, culture, learning, and hospitality, closely connected with the Piast dynasty. Medieval tradition associates its scriptorium with Gallus Anonymus, the first chronicler of Poland, and it is believed that the name “Greater Poland” (Wielkopolska) was first recorded here. The abbey church is also the burial place of Duke Władysław Laskonogi and houses the tomb of the Servant of God Fr. Bernard of Wąbrzeźno OSB (1575–1603), a Benedictine monk renowned for his holiness and venerated by pilgrims to this day. Despite wars, fires, the dissolution of the monastery in the nineteenth century, and the destruction of much of its buildings, monastic life was restored in 1923. Today, Lubiń is a Polish Historic Monument and a living Benedictine monastery. It continues to welcome pilgrims and visitors, offering a place of prayer, silence, hospitality, and the search for God according to the Rule of Saint Benedict.

Stay

Our days are filled with liturgical and personal prayer, spiritual reading, work, and service to others. Lubiń is one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Poland, with a long history and a rich cultural heritage. However, we are not a museum of monastic history and tradition. We are a community living in the present, seeking to embody monastic spirituality in the spirit of our holy father Benedict, while facing the demands of our times and the changing conditions of life. We are a community of several monks. We come from different parts of Poland, and each of us brings our own story, experience, and talents to the community. We strive to do many things ourselves, with the support of our friends, oblates, and a small number of employees. We also run a small business, producing and selling monastery products. We are grateful to all our benefactors for their kindness and for every form of support they offer to our community. We are deeply rooted in the local community and feel that we are part of it. Our monastery is also a place of encounter for many people who come here to share our way of life, even if only for a short time. Guests stay in our guest house, join us for prayer, and take part in work together with the brothers. Lubiń is also a place of pilgrimage and a destination for visitors. We offer guided tours of the monastery, sharing its history, cultural heritage, and the life of our Benedictine community. We want everyone who crosses the threshold of our monastery not only to see its historic treasures, but also to encounter a community of monks who, despite their differences and the challenges they face, pray, work, and seek God here.
