Founded around 1070 by King Bolesław the Generous, the Benedictine Abbey in Lubiń is one of the oldest monasteries in Poland. Established to support the young Polish state, it soon became an important center of prayer, culture, learning, and hospitality, closely connected with the Piast dynasty. Medieval tradition associates its scriptorium with Gallus Anonymus, the first chronicler of Poland, and it is believed that the name “Greater Poland” (Wielkopolska) was first recorded here. The abbey church is also the burial place of Duke Władysław Laskonogi and houses the tomb of the Servant of God Fr. Bernard of Wąbrzeźno OSB (1575–1603), a Benedictine monk renowned for his holiness and venerated by pilgrims to this day. Despite wars, fires, the dissolution of the monastery in the nineteenth century, and the destruction of much of its buildings, monastic life was restored in 1923. Today, Lubiń is a Polish Historic Monument and a living Benedictine monastery. It continues to welcome pilgrims and visitors, offering a place of prayer, silence, hospitality, and the search for God according to the Rule of Saint Benedict.
