About

A monastery on the Camino de Santiago. We share our Benedictine life of prayer and hospitality with all those who are on the journey in the spirit of seeking God.

History

The Monastery of San Salvador del Monte Irago was established as a dependent house of the Archabbey of St. Ottilien on February 2, 2001. It is located on the Camino de Santiago, near the Monte Irago pass and the Cruz de Ferro. From its beginnings, it was founded with the vocation of offering pilgrims a space for prayer, silence, and encounter with God within the spiritual and monastic tradition that historically shaped the Camino de Santiago. The foundation is inspired by the ancient monastic tradition of western León, linked to the nearby Valley of Silence, where Saints Fructuosus, Valerius, and Genadius lived (7th–11th centuries). This early medieval spiritual presence is also evoked in the diocesan and monastic council held around Monte Irago in the year 946. In this same monastic context, at the end of the 11th century, the figure of the hermit Gaucelmo emerged. He was an heir to the local eremitic spiritual tradition, but his evolution led him to found, next to Monte Irago, a church dedicated to San Salvador (Christ in the mystery of the Transfiguration). Next to it, he built a hospital for pilgrims to Santiago. The monastic church and hostel are documented in the privilege granted by Alfonso VI in 1103. The contemporary monastery continues this historical synthesis between monastic contemplation and hospitality of the Camino, understanding the pilgrimage to Santiago as an inner journey of transformation, transfiguration, and encounter with God.

Stay

The Benedictine Monastery of San Salvador de Monte Irago offers pilgrims the opportunity to make a retreat on the Camino, inviting them to pause, reflect on their Camino and their lives, and to participate in our Benedictine community by praying and breaking bread with us. We require a minimum stay of two nights; however, there is the possibility of staying longer if appropriate. Since we do not know how long pilgrims will stay, we are unable to take reservations, as a pilgrim may stay two nights or two weeks. When you arrive in Rabanal del Camino, please stop by our monastery shop and ask to speak to the hospitalero or prior to see if you can stay with us.

The last prayer of the day, Compline, concludes with the blessing of the pilgrims.
